According to Wikipedia, the word "pajama" came by the way of the Hindi word pajama, originally from the Persian words پايجامه Payjama meaning "leg garment." The typical design are basic, loose fitting pants with a drawstring. However, the modern elastic waistband is a great alteration on a wonderfully comfortable product.

According to Dave Nalle, "What made pajamas the international clothes sensation of the 19th century was their versatility and comfort. Pajamas were not designed or intended exclusively for sleep. They're multi-purpose, designed to wear all the time for work, sleep or lounging about. Easy to put on, easy to take off. No need for a belt or suspenders. The ultimate in practical legwear. Those qualities account for the recent pajama renaissance and their popularity among bloggers. It's easier to think great thoughts when you're not constricted by heavy fabrics, zippers, belts and the need to avoid wrinkling a fine fabric. Admittedly, some Victorians looked on pajamas as a bit decadent, but they couldn't resist the tide of change, and by the 1890s they were ubiquitous, favored by the intellectuals of the Roaring 90s, the perfect clothing for informal wear while reading Oscar Wilde. From there on, into the 20th and 21st centuries pajamas have been a fixture of the leisure wardrobe."

For those of you who just want something comfortable to sleep in, silk pajamas are difinitly the way to go. Silk is quite possibly the world’s best-loved cooling fabric. In hotter climates, silk is a flat out necessity. Certainly you should consider trying silk pajamas. But be warned: for some people silk pajamas are almost too comfortable. For instance, boxer Bernard Hopkins recently stated: "It's hard to get up at 5am (to train) when you wear silk pajamas".

A tip from the Parkinson Society of Canada: If turning in bed is difficult, the slippery surfaces of silk sheets and pajamas can lessen the friction, making rolling over easier.
